In the spring of 1999, the life of Hardee Moseley Schmidt, a 52-year-old Caucasian woman and avid runner from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was horrifically cut short. On the morning of May 30th, she embarked on her regular jog through the Pollard Estates neighborhood, a routine that would tragically lead her into the path of a predator. Unbeknownst to her, a man had been watching her for three weeks, plotting his attack.
That morning, he brought his sinister plan to fruition, intentionally striking her with his vehicle.
The man behind the wheel was Sean Vincent Gillis. After hitting Schmidt, he dragged her into his car and took her to a secluded location where he subjected her to a brutal sexual assault before strangling her to death. For two days, her body remained hidden in the trunk of his car. Gillis then drove to a bayou in St. James Parish and disposed of her remains. Her body was discovered on June 1, 1999.
The investigation into Schmidt's disappearance and murder led authorities to Sean Vincent Gillis, who was later identified as a serial killer responsible for the deaths of at least eight women in the Baton Rouge area between 1994 and 2004. During questioning, Gillis confessed to the abduction, rape, and murder of Hardee Schmidt, providing chilling details of his calculated and brutal actions. His confession, along with other evidence, led to his arrest and subsequent charges for her murder.
