Hardee Moseley Schmidt, a 52-year-old Caucasian woman from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was an avid runner who had previously participated in the Boston Marathon. On the morning of May 30, 1999, she set out for her regular jog in her Baton Rouge neighborhood. Witnesses reported seeing her at approximately 6:25 a.m. as she ran through the Pollard Estates area. However, she never returned home. Her husband, Baton Rouge attorney Bob Schmidt, was asleep at the time of her disappearance.
