Shirley Gene Arthur, a 33-year-old Navy enlisted man, was last seen hiking out of Pineville, West Virginia, in November 1963. His disappearance was one of several mysterious cases that fueled speculation about a possible serial killer operating in the region. Authorities later discovered a man's torso on a mountain near Pineville on December 7, 1963, and speculated that it might belong to Arthur, though they were unable to make a definitive identification.
