Teresa Elizabeth Jeffries, a 51-year-old White / Caucasian female from Glen Jean, West Virginia, was killed on the morning of June 29, 2023, in the Shady Spring area of Raleigh County. What began as an ordinary Thursday near Route 19 quickly became a violent scene in front of Shady Spring Elementary School, where deputies were called after reports of a shooting and an unresponsive person inside a vehicle. When Raleigh County deputies and emergency responders arrived, they found Teresa in a Jeep SUV or parked vehicle near the school area. She had been shot multiple times and died at the scene.
Authorities soon treated the case as a murder-suicide investigation. Early reports said law enforcement identified a male suspect and began searching for him after the shooting. Deputies, West Virginia State Police, and other assisting agencies followed leads to a residence in the Beckley area.
When officers confronted the suspect, he reportedly took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officials later identified the alleged shooter as John Carpenter.
Investigators described the incident as domestic-related. Reports said Carpenter allegedly shot Teresa around 11:00 a.m. before fleeing the scene, then returned to the Beckley-area residence where the confrontation with law enforcement ended in his death. Because Carpenter died the same day, there were no arrests, trials, or convictions. The case was effectively closed through the identification and death of the suspected shooter rather than through prosecution.
Teresa’s death left behind a family who remembered far more than the circumstances of the shooting. Her obituary described her as someone who loved working with the elderly, spending time outdoors, tending her flower bed, fishing, riding four-wheelers, and being with family. She was survived by her husband, son, grandchildren, parents, siblings, and extended relatives. Her final moments unfolded in a public place near a school, but the fuller story of her life was rooted in family, caregiving, and the everyday joys she shared with the people who loved her.
