Donald Barker, a 62-year-old white male, was tragically killed on September 15, 2005, in Iredell County, North Carolina. He and his 63-year-old wife, Sue Barker, were found shot to death in their home on Whites Farm Road. This incident occurred nearly eight months after the similar double homicide of James and Ruth Delet Powell, aged 74 and 71 respectively, in Union Grove on January 20, 2005.
Both couples were well-known in their communities, and their deaths deeply unsettled local residents.
The investigation revealed that the same firearm was used in both double homicides. Authorities arrested 65-year-old Barbara Ann Evans on July 26, 2006, charging her with four counts of murder in connection with the deaths of the Barkers and the Powells. Evans had personal connections to both couples; she was a frequent customer at the Barkers' convenience store and had a history with James Powell through her late husband's antique car hobby. Despite the arrest, the motive behind the killings remained unclear, and investigators emphasized the complexity of the case due to the lack of an apparent motive.
Evans had previously been granted permits to purchase handguns in 2004, which became a point of interest during the investigation. She was held without bail and appeared in court requesting a court-appointed attorney. However, in 2009, the charges against Evans were dismissed after a judge ruled her incompetent to stand trial due to dementia. The judge determined that her condition was progressively deteriorating and unlikely to improve, leading to the dismissal of the case. This outcome left the victims' families and the community without the closure they had hoped for.
