Dante Angelo Grassi, a 76-year-old male, was tragically killed on October 30, 2019, in Newport, North Carolina. The incident was part of a double murder-suicide that also claimed the life of Beatrice Mary Grassi, a 79-year-old female. The events unfolded at a residence shared by two sisters and their husbands. The Carteret County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call around 9:02 a.m.
reporting a shooting at the home located on Newport Loop Road.
Upon arrival, deputies and fire rescue personnel discovered the bodies of Dante Grassi, Beatrice Grassi, and Mark Tyler Throckmorton, a 62-year-old male. Preliminary investigations revealed that a physical altercation had erupted between Mark Throckmorton and Dante Grassi. During the confrontation, Throckmorton, who owned the home with his wife, shot both Dante and Beatrice Grassi with a large-caliber revolver before turning the gun on himself. Throckmorton's wife was present during the incident but was unharmed.
The investigation into the incident indicated that there was no ongoing threat to the community. The deceased were transferred to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Jacksonville for further examination. The Carteret County Sheriff's Office continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the altercation and subsequent shootings. The tragic event left the community in shock, as it involved individuals who were well-known and respected in the area.
