In the quiet community of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, the Groene family's life was irrevocably shattered on May 16, 2005. On that day, authorities made a gruesome discovery at their home, finding the bodies of 40-year-old Brenda Groene, her boyfriend Mark McKenzie, 37, and her 13-year-old Caucasian son, Slade Groene. The victims had been bound and brutally beaten to death, with the cause of death later determined to be blunt force trauma to the head.
The horrific scene was further compounded by the fact that Brenda's two youngest children, 9-year-old Dylan and 8-year-old Shasta, were missing.
The ensuing investigation quickly launched a massive search for the missing children and the perpetrator of the heinous crime. The community was gripped by fear and uncertainty as days turned into weeks with no sign of Dylan and Shasta. The breakthrough in the case came nearly seven weeks later, on July 2, 2005. A waitress at a Denny's restaurant in Coeur d'Alene recognized Shasta in the company of a man and alerted the authorities. The man was promptly arrested and identified as Joseph Edward Duncan III, a convicted sex offender.
Following his arrest, the harrowing details of the children's abduction and the murders of their family came to light, largely through the courageous testimony of Shasta Groene. She revealed that Duncan had stalked their family after seeing her and Dylan playing in their yard. He broke into their home, subdued the adults and Slade, and then led the two younger children outside. From the yard, Shasta heard terrifying sounds from within the house and witnessed her older brother, Slade, stagger out of the home, grievously injured, before Duncan killed him.
Duncan then abducted Dylan and Shasta, taking them to a remote campsite in Montana. Tragically, Duncan later murdered Dylan in front of his sister. Shasta's ordeal continued until she was rescued at the Denny's. Her resilience and detailed account were instrumental in the case against Duncan. Joseph Edward Duncan III was subsequently convicted for the murders of Brenda Groene, Mark McKenzie, and Slade Groene, as well as the kidnapping of Shasta and Dylan and the murder of Dylan. He received multiple life sentences and death sentences for his crimes.
