In a quiet corner of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, the life of nine-year-old White male, Dylan Groene, was horrifically cut short in the summer of 2005. The harrowing ordeal began on the night of May 16, 2005, when Joseph Edward Duncan III, a convicted sex offender on the run from a child molestation charge in Minnesota, broke into the Groene family home. Duncan, who had been stalking the family after spotting Dylan and his younger sister Shasta playing outside, brutally murdered Dylan's mother, Brenda
Groene, her boyfriend Mark McKenzie, and his 13-year-old brother, Slade Groene, with a hammer. Following the gruesome slayings, Duncan abducted Dylan and his then eight-year-old sister, Shasta.
For weeks, Duncan held the two children captive, subjecting them to unimaginable torture and abuse at a remote campsite in the Lolo National Forest in Montana. The nightmare for Dylan ended in his death at the hands of his captor. Duncan murdered the young boy in front of his sister and then attempted to dispose of his body by burning it in a campfire. Shasta was forced to witness this horrific act.
Shasta's torment continued for seven weeks until she was rescued on July 2, 2005. A waitress at a Denny's restaurant in Coeur d'Alene recognized her from news reports and alerted the authorities, leading to Duncan's arrest at the scene. Information provided by Shasta after her rescue led investigators to the Montana campsite where they discovered Dylan's remains.
Joseph Edward Duncan III, a man with a long and violent history of sexual crimes against children, was taken into custody. He eventually pleaded guilty to the murders of Brenda Groene, Mark McKenzie, and Slade Groene in state court. In a separate federal case, he also pleaded guilty to the kidnapping of Dylan and Shasta, and the murder of Dylan. Duncan received multiple death sentences and life sentences for his heinous crimes. He died in prison from brain cancer on March 28, 2021.
