On October 13, 2004, Larry Matthews, a 46-year-old African American man, was found deceased near railroad tracks in Paradis, Louisiana. A railroad worker discovered his body lying next to a pond, and authorities estimated it had been there for approximately 24 hours. An autopsy conducted by the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office identified the preliminary cause of death as a drug overdose complicated by an internal injury typically caused by a fall.
