In the winter of 2005, a wave of terror gripped the city of Phoenix as a series of random, senseless shootings plagued the community. Among the innocent lives tragically cut short was that of Jose Ortiz, a 44-year-old man who was fatally shot on the night of December 29, 2005. His death was not an isolated incident but rather a part of a much larger and more sinister crime spree that would later be attributed to the "Serial Shooters," Dale Hausner and Samuel Dieteman.
On that fateful evening, just a day after another man, Marco Carillo, was also shot and killed in a similar fashion in Phoenix, Mr. Ortiz became another victim in the duo's reign of terror. The shootings were indiscriminate, with victims often being targeted at random as they went about their daily lives. The attacks, which had begun earlier in the year, included the killing of pedestrians, bicyclists, and even animals, creating a climate of fear and uncertainty throughout the Valley.
The extensive investigation into the string of violent acts eventually led law enforcement to Dale Hausner and his accomplice, Samuel Dieteman. The pair was arrested in August 2006, bringing an end to their 14-month-long crime spree that resulted in eight deaths and numerous injuries. During their trial, the horrifying details of their methods came to light, revealing how they would cruise the streets at night, randomly selecting victims to shoot from their vehicle.
Dale Hausner was ultimately convicted on 80 charges, including the murder of Jose Ortiz. He was sentenced to death for his heinous crimes. Samuel Dieteman, who cooperated with prosecutors and testified against Hausner, received a life sentence. Hausner's reign of terror officially ended when he took his own life in prison. The conviction of Hausner and Dieteman finally brought a measure of justice to the families of their many victims, including the family of Jose Ortiz, whose life was senselessly taken on that cold December night.
