Cheri Domingo, a 35-year-old woman, was tragically murdered on July 27, 1981, in Goleta, California. She was staying at a relative's house with her companion, Gregory Sanchez, when an intruder broke in during the night. The attacker, later identified as the Golden State Killer, carried out a brutal assault, binding Domingo and shooting Sanchez before savagely beating them both to death.
Evidence suggests that Sanchez put up a fight against the much smaller attacker, who ultimately shot him in the face. The bullet subdued Sanchez momentarily, allowing the assailant to tightly bind Domingo's hands and feet. Sanchez seemingly regained some strength and attempted to fight back, but the killer struck him repeatedly in the head. Domingo was killed by a particularly forceful blow to the head.
