Joseph Kalina was among the victims of a series of mysterious deaths at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital in Tyler, Texas. Kalina, along with three other patients—John Lafferty, Ronald Clark, and Christopher Greenaway—died under suspicious circumstances while recovering from heart surgeries. The deaths were later linked to William George Davis, a former nurse at the hospital, who was convicted of capital murder for his actions.
Davis was found
guilty of injecting air into the arterial systems of his patients, causing fatal complications. Kalina's condition deteriorated suddenly on January 25, 2018, prompting hospital authorities to launch an investigation. Surveillance footage revealed Davis entering the rooms of recovering patients moments before their health took a drastic turn. Medical experts testified that brain scans of the victims showed signs consistent with air embolism, a rare but deadly condition.
During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Davis had deliberately harmed patients to prolong their ICU stays, allowing him to work more hours and earn additional income. His internet search history included queries about serial killers, further reinforcing suspicions about his motives. After deliberating for two hours, a Smith County jury sentenced Davis to death, bringing closure to the families of the victims.
