Donnavon Reese, a 27-year-old African American male, was found dead on May 12, 2019, in Tyler, Texas. The incident occurred around 2:10 a.m. at a convenience store located at 11812 Highway 64 West. Reese was discovered inside a vehicle parked in front of the store, having sustained an apparent gunshot wound. The Smith County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The investigation revealed that Reese had been
involved in a confrontation with James Robert Smith III, also 27 years old, who was identified as the suspected shooter. According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Reese and Smith had a history of altercations, including an incident where Reese allegedly robbed Smith of approximately three pounds of marijuana two years prior to the shooting. Additionally, a family member of Reese informed investigators that Reese had beaten up Smith in a Walmart parking lot four months before the fatal encounter.
On the night of the shooting, Reese was reportedly working to change a flat tire and had returned to the driver's seat of his vehicle. Two passengers were also present in the car with Reese. Witnesses stated that Smith, dressed in a gray hoodie, drove up beside the vehicle and pulled out a gun. He then addressed Reese with the words "Hey bro" before opening fire. The affidavit noted that 17 bullet holes were found in Reese's car, and a Winchester .40 caliber shell casing was discovered at the crime scene.
Law enforcement executed a search warrant on Smith's residence, where they found evidence linking him to the shooting, including clothing matching the description of what he was wearing during the incident. A Springfield pistol and a box of .40 caliber Winchester bullets were also seized. Smith was arrested and booked into the Smith County Jail on a $750,000 bond. He was later charged with first-degree murder and faced up to 99 years in prison if convicted.
The case against Smith experienced delays due to the large amount of evidence that needed to be reviewed by both the prosecution and the defense. Despite these delays, Smith eventually pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 50 years in prison for murder, along with 20 years for each count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
