In the quiet setting of Allegheny Township, Blair County, a tragic event unfolded on March 11, 1976, that would cut short the life of 18-year-old George Karns. A male, working as the sole attendant at the Shaw Oil Company gas station, Karns was shot five times in the head during the course of an armed robbery, resulting in his instant death. The perpetrators made off with approximately $400 in cash, leaving behind a scene that would spark a multi-state investigation.

The day following the murder, law enforcement in Buckingham County, Virginia, apprehended two individuals, Jeffrey Joseph Daugherty and his accomplice, Bonnie Jean Heath, shortly after they had committed another armed robbery at a small grocery store.
