Ira Adams, a 29-year-old Black man from Queens, New York, was found shot to death on March 19, 1984, inside a parked U-Haul truck that police determined had been stolen. The discovery began with a call from a concerned citizen, and when officers arrived they were met not just with a body, but with the first piece of a trail that felt deliberately left behind.
As investigators worked the scene, they learned Adams was known to police and had been repeatedly arrested for burglary and grand larceny. While searching for answers, officers found a note with an address written on it. It was close—only about six blocks away—so they went directly to the location, hoping it would explain why Adams had ended up in the back of a stolen rental truck.
Inside that nearby residence, they encountered a second horror: the body of Adams’s live-in girlfriend, Karen Jefferson, who had been shot in the head and chest. What had first appeared to be a single killing now looked like a linked double homicide, connected by that short distance across Queens and whatever had unfolded between the truck and the home.
In the days that followed, investigators focused on James Edward Daniels as the primary suspect. According to detectives, Daniels and Adams had been tied to a burglary ring operating around Queens, and the working theory was that a dispute over money escalated into murder—first Adams, then Jefferson, allegedly to eliminate a witness. Less than a week after the killings, both state and federal authorities issued an arrest warrant for Daniels, and police set up stakeouts in Brooklyn and Queens to try to catch him, but he stayed ahead of them.
Daniels did not live long enough to face arrest, charges, or trial in the Adams case. On May 7, 1984, a New Jersey State Trooper, Carlos Negron, was shot and killed after stopping to assist what appeared to be a disabled vehicle on the New Jersey Turnpike; the two occupants fled and were killed in a crash during the pursuit. Accounts identifying Daniels as one of the suspects describe him dying during that flight, ending the manhunt and leaving the Queens double homicide without courtroom resolution.
