Lu Thi Harris, an 81-year-old Vietnamese woman, was tragically murdered on March 20, 2018. Her death was part of a series of killings attributed to Billy Chemirmir, a man accused of targeting elderly women in the Dallas area. Chemirmir, who was 49 years old at the time of his arrest, was charged with capital murder in the deaths of 18 elderly women, including Harris.
He was known for posing as a maintenance or healthcare worker to gain access to his victims' homes, where he would smother them and steal their valuables.
On the day of Harris's murder, Chemirmir and Harris were both at the same Walmart. After following her home, Chemirmir killed her and stole her jewelry. Harris was found dead in her bedroom with lipstick smeared on her pillow, a sign of the violent struggle that took place. Chemirmir was arrested the following day after police found him with jewelry and cash belonging to Harris. A large red jewelry box in a dumpster near Chemirmir's apartment contained documents that led investigators to Harris's home.
Chemirmir's trial for Harris's murder was not straightforward. The first jury to hear the case deadlocked in November, leading to a retrial. In April 2022, Chemirmir was found guilty of capital murder in Harris's death and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors presented evidence of Chemirmir's involvement in other attacks and murders, including the killing of 87-year-old Mary Brooks and the attack on 91-year-old Mary Annis Bartel, who survived the assault but later died in 2020.
Chemirmir's conviction brought some relief to the families of his victims, who had long sought justice for their loved ones. The case highlighted the vulnerability of elderly individuals living in senior communities and the need for increased security measures to protect them from such heinous crimes.
