In the early morning hours of Saturday, October 9, 2021, a sense of unease settled over an apartment complex near 31st Street and Minnesota Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas. A call was made to law enforcement regarding suspicious activity, prompting a police response at approximately 3 a.m. What officers discovered inside one of the apartments was a grim scene: the lifeless body of Gail Horton, a 42-year-old Black woman.
