John Lee 'Johnny' Bayer, a 20-year-old male, was last seen on May 28, 1993, in Indianapolis. Bayer's car was found in a part of the city frequented by male prostitutes, and he never collected his final paycheck from his job at McDonald's, leaving his mother convinced that something was terribly wrong. For three years, his disappearance remained a painful mystery for his family.
The dark truth behind Johnny Bayer's fate began to surface as part of the investigation into Herbert Baumeister, a wealthy Indianapolis businessman. Baumeister, a married father of three who lived on an 18-acre estate known as Fox Hollow Farm, was leading a secret life. He was known to frequent gay bars in Indianapolis, luring young men back to his home where he would kill and bury them. It is believed he was responsible for the deaths of at least 25 people between the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The investigation into Baumeister escalated in June 1996 after his 15-year-old son discovered a human skull on their property. This prompted a police search of Fox Hollow Farm, which uncovered a horrifying scene: an estimated 10,000 'burnt and crushed' human skeletal remains were scattered across the estate. Through a painstaking process involving dental records and DNA testing, investigators were able to identify the remains of several victims, including Johnny Bayer.
As a warrant was issued for his arrest in 1996, 49-year-old Herb Baumeister fled to Ontario, Canada. There, he took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot, leaving behind a suicide note that made no mention of the murders or the remains found on his property. In the years since, ongoing forensic efforts have continued to identify more of Baumeister's victims from the vast number of remains recovered from his farm.
