In the summer of 2014, a discovery was made inside a car parked in the 4000 block of Meadows Drive in Indianapolis, Indiana, that brought a tragic end to the life of 48-year-old Louis Myers. On June 6, officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, acting on an anonymous tip, found Myers deceased in his vehicle. An examination by the deputy coroner would later reveal that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was officially ruled a homicide.
Investigators believed the motive for the fatal shooting was robbery.
The investigation into the death of the male victim quickly pointed to a primary suspect: 22-year-old Aaron Smith. On the night of the incident, Smith had arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound of his own, initially providing a false name to authorities. However, through DNA and blood evidence found at the crime scene, detectives were able to link him to Myers's death. Further investigation into Smith's background revealed a significant criminal history, including a prior conviction for carjacking in 2009 and numerous probation violations. At the time of Myers's death, Smith was on home detention and was being monitored with a GPS device, which he had repeatedly violated.
Following the investigation, Aaron Smith was arrested and charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a violent felon. While he was acquitted of the murder charge, he was ultimately convicted of felony murder. For his role in the death of Louis Myers, Smith was sentenced to 60 years in prison. The case highlighted the challenges of managing repeat offenders within the justice system and the critical role that community tips can play in solving violent crimes.
