On April 10, 2000, the body of 31-year-old Monica Johnson, an African American woman and mother of four, was discovered near Interstate 94 in Detroit. She had been strangled and was found unconscious at the scene. Despite medical intervention, she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into her death led authorities to John Eric Armstrong, a 26-year-old former sailor.
During the course of the investigation, Armstrong confessed to the murders of multiple women, including Monica Johnson. He admitted to soliciting her services, then assaulting and strangling her before leaving her near the interstate. His confession revealed a deep-seated animosity towards prostitutes.
Armstrong was subsequently charged and convicted of multiple counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Monica Johnson and other women. He received life sentences without the possibility of parole.
