Martin Mayo, a 46-year-old male, was a Special Officer with the Galveston Police Department in Texas. On July 28, 1905, he was tragically killed while responding to a domestic disturbance involving a man and a woman who were fighting over a jewelry box. During the altercation, Officer Mayo attempted to intervene and was shot in the back by the male suspect.
Despite efforts to save him, Officer Mayo succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.
The suspect in the case was subsequently convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the story did not end there. On March 21, 1936, the suspect met his own demise when he was accidentally shot and killed by a guard who was trying to break up a fight among other inmates at Wynne Prison Farm.
Officer Mayo had been with the Galveston Police Department for two years at the time of his death. He was survived by his wife and five children. His untimely death left a significant impact on the community and his fellow officers, who remembered him for his dedication and service.
