Guard W. F. Carr, aged 25, was employed as a night convict guard at the Jefferson County Convict Camp in Beaumont, Texas. On the evening of November 3, 1906, Carr was found dead in his bed by fellow guards who had returned to the camp. The cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound to the head, inflicted with Carr's own Winchester shotgun.
