Claudia Marilyn Rutt, an 18-year-old Caucasian female, tragically lost her life on August 1, 1966, in Austin, Texas. Claudia was one of the 14 victims killed by Charles Joseph Whitman during his infamous shooting rampage from the University of Texas Tower. This horrific event also left 32 others wounded. Claudia, a recent graduate of Stephen F. Austin High School, had been accepted to Texas Christian University for the upcoming fall term.
She had dreams of becoming a teacher and was looking forward to starting her college journey.
On that fateful day, Claudia was with her boyfriend, Paul Sonntag, who was also killed in the shooting. The couple was hiding behind a car on 23rd Street when they were struck by Whitman's bullets. The shooting spree began when Whitman, a former Marine, climbed to the observation deck of the University of Texas Tower and started firing at people below. The attack lasted for about 96 minutes before Whitman was finally shot and killed by police officers.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that Whitman had been suffering from severe mental health issues, including a brain tumor that was discovered during his autopsy. Despite this, there were no arrests or litigations directly related to Claudia's death, as Whitman was the sole perpetrator and was killed during the incident. The University of Texas Tower shooting remains one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history and has had a lasting impact on the community and the nation as a whole.
