Alyssa Marie Broderick, a 17-year-old girl from Austin, Texas, tragically lost her life on April 18, 2021. She was the adopted daughter of Stephen Broderick, a former Travis County Sheriff's Office detective. Alyssa was killed alongside her mother, Amanda Broderick, and her boyfriend, Willie Simmons III, as they arrived for a supervised custody visit.
Stephen Broderick was accused of sexually and physically abusing Alyssa starting in March 2020.
In June 2020, Amanda Broderick took Alyssa to Dell Children's Hospital for a Sexual Assault Forensic Exam, where evidence of trauma was found. Amanda filed for divorce shortly after, and Stephen was indicted on 12 counts of physical and sexual abuse in November 2020. Despite being ordered to have no contact with Alyssa and to wear a GPS tracker, Stephen Broderick was released from jail after posting bond.
On the day of the murders, Stephen Broderick shot and killed Alyssa, Amanda, and Willie Simmons III as they arrived at the drop-off location for the custody visit. The child of Stephen and Amanda Broderick, who was present during the incident, managed to escape and alert authorities. Stephen Broderick was later arrested and charged with capital murder.
In September 2022, Stephen Broderick pled guilty to the murders and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The court documents revealed that Stephen Broderick had a history of abuse and had been released from jail despite the serious charges against him. The family of the victims expressed their dissatisfaction with the plea deal, as it dropped the sexual abuse charges.
The tragic loss of Alyssa Broderick and the subsequent legal proceedings highlighted the failures in the system that allowed Stephen Broderick to continue his abusive behavior despite multiple warnings and legal actions.
