Patrolman Fulgencio Velasco III, age 26, was a young officer with the Mission Police Department in Texas. On December 16, 1978, he responded to a domestic disturbance call at a small restaurant. As he and his partner entered the establishment through the back door, they were immediately met with gunfire. Patrolman Velasco was shot several times but managed to return fire, killing the suspect. Despite his injuries, he was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.
