Correctional Officer Dalton B. Cawthray, aged 45, was accidentally shot and killed on January 5, 1984, while cleaning guns in the jail armory at the Clemens Unit in Brazoria, Texas. Officer Cawthray, a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, was struck in the chest by an inadvertently discharged firearm. He was survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters, and mother.
