In the late afternoon of a Thursday in Austin, Texas, a dispute over a moving truck rental escalated into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 39-year-old William Rogers. The incident, which marked Austin's 17th homicide of 2026, occurred on April 2, 2026, at a Penske truck rental facility located at 8201 Tuscany Way. Rogers, a Black male, was at the location with two acquaintances, Javarus Crumpton and another individual, with the intention of renting a moving truck.
The three men were all employed as movers.
An argument reportedly erupted amongst the men concerning the cost of the rental deposit. During the course of this disagreement, Crumpton allegedly shot Rogers. The Austin Police Department received a call about the shooting at approximately 5:42 p.m. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Rogers on the ground with evident gunshot wounds, with two individuals standing near him. Emergency medical services were rendered at the scene before Rogers was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 6:52 p.m.
Following the shooting, both Javarus Crumpton, identified as the 28-year-old suspect, and the third man present remained at the scene and have been cooperating with the ongoing police investigation. As of the initial reports, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting. The Travis County District Attorney's office has been briefed on the incident as the investigation continues. Authorities have indicated that this appears to be an isolated event and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
