Corporal Lawrence Rudy Cadena Sr., aged 43, was a dedicated officer with the Dallas Police Department, having served for 17 years. On December 13, 1988, he was tragically shot and killed during an undercover narcotics investigation near the intersection of North Fitzhugh Avenue and Capitol Avenue. As the investigation commenced, one of the suspects opened Corporal Cadena's car door and shot him multiple times in the abdomen, chest, and arms.
This led to a gun battle between the shooters and other officers on the scene.
During the ensuing chaos, one assailant was shot and killed, while two others were wounded. The investigation and subsequent legal proceedings resulted in one of the wounded suspects being sentenced to death and the other to life imprisonment. The suspect who was sentenced to death was executed on August 14, 2002.
Corporal Cadena is remembered for his bravery and dedication to his duty. He is survived by three children, who continue to honor his memory. His death serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face in the line of duty and the sacrifices they make to keep their communities safe.
