Senior Corporal Mark Timothy Nix, a 33-year-old white male, was tragically killed on March 23, 2007, in Dallas, Texas. Nix, who served with the Dallas Police Department for nearly seven years, was attempting to apprehend a murder suspect when he was fatally shot. The incident occurred after Nix and his partner responded to back up two plainclothes officers who had spotted a car believed to have been used in a homicide two days earlier.
The suspect's vehicle crashed in the 4100 block of Bernal Drive following a short pursuit, and the suspect opened fire from inside the car, striking Nix in the chest, neck, and leg. Due to rush-hour traffic, ambulances were delayed, and another officer transported Nix to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect, Wesley Ruiz, a Hispanic male, remained in his vehicle following an exchange of gunfire with officers, during which he was wounded. After an approximate two-hour standoff, members of the Dallas Police Department's SWAT team breached the car and took Ruiz into custody. Ruiz was later convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death. He was executed on February 1, 2023. Ruiz's defense had argued that jurors relied on "overtly racist" and "blatant anti-Hispanic stereotypes" in appraising whether Ruiz posed a future danger, an element needed to secure a death sentence in Texas. However, the Texas Attorney General's Office stated that Ruiz's claim of juror bias had no merit.
Nix, a United States Navy veteran of Operation Desert Storm, was engaged to be married at the time of his death. He is survived by his fiancée, parents, and sister. The tragic incident highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the impact of their loss on their families and communities.
