Deputy Sheriff Suzanne Lee Kays, aged 33, was tragically shot and killed on January 4, 1989, while working for the Dallas County Sheriff's Department in Texas. She was escorting a homeless man who had just been released from jail from the Lew Sterrett Justice Center when he suddenly attacked her. During the struggle, he took her weapon and used it to shoot her. The assailant was later confronted by Dallas Police officers and was shot in the legs and groin when he refused to drop the gun.
