On June 27, 1990, James Bruce Irby, a 37-year-old male police officer with the Houston Police Department, was fatally shot during a routine traffic stop. Officer Irby, who was of Caucasian ethnicity, was killed near the intersection of Airline Drive and Lyerly Street. As he was speaking with the driver of the vehicle, the passenger, Carl Wayne Buntion, exited the car and shot Officer Irby five times with a .357 handgun.
