At the time of the incident, Frederick Hicks was in his apartment with his girlfriend and 28-year-old Travaee Unique Bradley, who is the niece of Hicks's girlfriend. According to reports, as Hicks's girlfriend stepped outside to smoke a cigarette, Bradley allegedly shot Frederick Hicks, resulting in his death.
Following the incident, Travaee Unique Bradley was charged with murder for allegedly shooting the 59-year-old man to death.

Visitation services were held on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 A.M. Both services were held at the Church At Bethel's Family, located at 14442 Fonmeadow Dr., Houston, Texas 77035. Interment took place at the Houston National Cemetery.
Prior to his death, Frederick Hicks had a criminal record. On May 25, 2013, he was arrested by the Department of Public Safety in Brazoria County, Texas, and was charged with "Fail to ID Fugitive Intent Give False Info" and "Violate Parole." He was released on August 2, 2013.
