Constable Darrell Edward Lunsford Sr., aged 47, was shot and killed on January 23, 1991, while on duty in Nacogdoches, Texas. Lunsford, who served with the Nacogdoches County Constable's Office - Precinct 3, was conducting a routine traffic stop on U.S. Highway 59 near Garrison when he discovered marijuana in the trunk of the suspect's vehicle. The three suspects, Baldemar Villarreal, Reynaldo Villarreal, and Jesus Cortez Zambrano, then attacked Lunsford, beating and stabbing him before shooting him with his own service weapon.
The entire incident was captured on Lunsford's dashboard camera, providing crucial evidence that led to the arrest, trial, and conviction of the three suspects for his murder. The tragic event has been described as one of the most infamous dates in the history of Texas law enforcement. In recognition of his sacrifice, U.S. Highway 59 was renamed the Constable Darrell Lunsford Memorial Highway in May 2019.
Lunsford is survived by his wife and two children, and his legacy continues to be honored by law enforcement agencies and the community. His death serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers faced by those who serve and protect.
