On August 7, 2023, 13-year-old Cason Wesley Hines tragically lost his life in a firearms accident in Snyder, Texas. Cason was the son of Nathan Hines, a dedicated firefighter who has served the Snyder community for over a decade.
Born on December 4, 2009, in Lubbock, Texas, alongside his twin brother, Gunner, Cason was known for his vibrant personality and diverse interests.
He was about to begin the 8th grade at Ira Independent School District (ISD), where he actively participated in football, basketball, and track. His favorite subject was science, reflecting his curiosity about the universe and the natural world.
Cason's passions extended beyond academics and sports. He was an avid reader, achieving over one million words read in 2022, and took part in theater productions such as "Frozen," "Shrek," and "Seussical" at The Ritz Theatre, as well as Junior High UIL One-Act plays at Ira ISD. His love for the outdoors was evident through his hobbies of hunting, fishing, and treasure hunting for fossils and wildlife. Additionally, he showed goats through Ira FFA, caring for seven goats with unique names like Gasstation and Lugnut.
Cason's commitment to his faith was demonstrated through his baptism on October 1, 2017, and his active involvement in teaching Sunday school and preparing meals for the Freeway Ministry at Calvary Baptist Church alongside his family.
The Snyder community has been profoundly affected by Cason's untimely passing. The Snyder Professional Firefighters Association expressed their deep sorrow, noting that the loss is overwhelming for both the fire department and the broader community.
Funeral services were held on August 11, 2023, at Calvary Baptist Church in Snyder, followed by burial at Ira Cemetery in Ira, Texas. In honor of Cason's aspiration to become a marine biologist, the family suggested that donations be made in his name to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
