Troy Merle Hogue, a 39-year-old male of Caucasian ethnicity, was a dedicated State Trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety. He began his career with the department on January 19, 1988, and was stationed in Big Spring, Texas. Tragically, Trooper Hogue was shot and killed on December 30, 1994, while conducting an accident investigation on Interstate 20 in Howard County, Texas.
The incident occurred when Trooper Hogue and another trooper arrived at the scene of a single-vehicle
accident involving a juvenile male who had been detained for driving while intoxicated. As they attempted to interview the suspect, the juvenile pulled out a handgun and shot Trooper Hogue at point-blank range. The troopers and a sheriff's deputy quickly disarmed the suspect, who was later identified as Levy Lee Edmondson Jr., a 17-year-old from Big Spring.
Following the shooting, Edmondson was charged with capital murder and sentenced to life in prison. The Texas Rangers, the investigative arm of the Texas Department of Public Safety, conducted the investigation into Trooper Hogue's death. Trooper Hogue had served with the Texas Highway Patrol for seven years and had previously served with the Big Spring Police Department for 10 years. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter, parents, and two sisters.
Trooper Hogue's death was a significant loss to his family, colleagues, and the community. His dedication and service to law enforcement are remembered and honored by those who knew him.
