William Dewayne Jones Sr., a 49-year-old African-American police officer with the Austin Park Police Department, tragically lost his life on May 28, 2000. Officer Jones was conducting a routine traffic stop at Zilker Park when the driver of the vehicle he had stopped opened fire, striking him twice in the chest and once in the neck. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Officer Jones succumbed to his injuries.
