Deputy Sheriff John Charles Risley, aged 37, was shot and killed on October 23, 2000, while responding to a disturbance call in a rural area near Tomball, Texas. Risley, a 10-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Office, arrived at the scene after a resident reported that their elderly neighbor, Jimmy Ross Whitehead Sr., was wielding a shotgun and claiming to be involved in a Mafia drug deal. Risley requested backup before being shot multiple times by Whitehead.
