Deputy Sheriff Joseph Norman Dennis, aged 35, was shot and killed on May 22, 2001, in Houston, Texas. Dennis, who served with the Harris County Sheriff's Office for 14 years, responded to a domestic disturbance call involving a brother and sister. The brother had taken the sister's car without permission and returned it damaged the next morning. When Dennis attempted to arrest the suspect, a struggle ensued, and the suspect managed to grab a concealed handgun and shot Dennis in the head.
Dennis was flown to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Jesus Flores, fled the scene but was arrested later that afternoon with Dennis' handcuff still on his wrist and the weapon in his possession. Flores was convicted of capital murder on November 30, 2001, and sentenced to death on December 6, 2001. However, Flores committed suicide in his cell on January 29, 2008, while awaiting his execution date.
Dennis is survived by his wife, who is also a deputy, a son, a daughter, and his parents. His death was a significant loss to the Harris County Sheriff's Office and the community, as he was remembered as a dedicated officer and a loving family man.
