On June 19, 2010, Martha Johnson, a 48-year-old white female from Shamrock, Texas, was found deceased in her rural residence northeast of the city. Authorities received a call around 3:45 PM reporting a possible homicide at her home. Initial information suggested that the suspect might be barricaded inside the house, prompting the Wheeler County Sheriff's Office to seek assistance from the Amarillo Police SWAT team, the Texas Rangers, and the Texas Highway Patrol.
Upon entering the residence, officers discovered that Martha Johnson had been fatally shot.
The investigation revealed that Martha's husband, 54-year-old Raphael Johnson, was the primary suspect. Evidence indicated that Raphael Johnson had shot his wife before fleeing the scene on foot. Approximately half a mile from the residence, authorities found Raphael Johnson deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident was classified as a murder-suicide, with Raphael Johnson as the perpetrator and Martha Johnson as the victim.
Martha Johnson was born on September 22, 1961, in Bryan, Texas, to Albert and Billie Jones. She graduated from Connally High School in 1980 and earned an Associate's Degree from Texas State Technical Institute in 1982. At the time of her death, she was employed as a Compliance Manager for British Petroleum Company. She was survived by her mother, Billie Jones, her siblings, and her children: daughters Mary Johnson and Jennifer Robinson, and sons Chet Johnson, Ray Johnson Jr., and Eric Johnson. She also had several grandchildren.
The tragic event shocked the small community of Shamrock, Texas. The Texas Rangers and the Wheeler County Sheriff's Office conducted a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Given that the perpetrator, Raphael Johnson, died by suicide shortly after committing the murder, no arrests were made, and no other suspects were identified in connection with Martha Johnson's death.
