Gelareh Bagherzadeh, a 30-year-old Iranian-American activist and researcher at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, was tragically murdered on January 15, 2012, in Houston, Texas. Gelareh was shot dead in her car while she was on the phone with her ex-boyfriend, Robeen Bandar. According to Bandar, she suddenly screamed before going silent.
