Gelareh Bagherzadeh, a 30-year-old Iranian-American activist and researcher at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, was tragically murdered on January 15, 2012, in Houston, Texas. Gelareh was shot dead in her car while she was on the phone with her ex-boyfriend, Robeen Bandar. According to Bandar, she suddenly screamed before going silent. He immediately alerted the police and rushed to her location near the Galleria area, where authorities found her lifeless body.
Initially, investigators believed that the murder might have been politically motivated due to Gelareh's involvement in founding SabzHouston, an organization advocating for democratic change in Iran, and her vocal criticism of the local government.
The investigation took a significant turn when, ten months later, Coty Beavers, the twin brother of Gelareh's boyfriend Cory Beavers, was also shot to death. This connection led investigators to suspect that the murders were linked. In May 2014, the FBI conducted raids in East Montgomery County, resulting in the arrest of Nasim Ali Irsan in connection with Gelareh's murder. Further investigations revealed that Nasim's father, Ali Mahmood Awad Irsan, his wife, and daughter were also involved. They were arrested on federal charges of conspiracy to defraud the U.S., theft of public money, and benefits fraud. In April 2015, authorities announced that the murders were fueled by Ali Irsan's rage, who felt that his daughter had dishonored him by converting to Christianity and marrying a Christian man.
Ali Mahmood Awad Irsan, a Jordanian-American, was charged with capital murder in the deaths of Gelareh Bagherzadeh and Coty Beavers. His wife, Shmou Ali Alrawabdeh, and their 21-year-old son, Nasim, were also charged with murder. The authorities deduced that the murders were part of Ali's broader plan to hunt down and harm his daughter, Nesreen, and those close to her. Ali's daughter, Nadia, faced a stalking charge for trying to locate Nesreen and Coty Beavers. The case was described as an "honor killing," driven by Ali's belief that his honor as a father and a Muslim had been violated by his daughter's defiance.
The investigation into Gelareh Bagherzadeh's murder highlighted the toxic family dynamics and extreme beliefs that led to the tragic events. Ali Irsan was ultimately convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death in August 2018. The case remains a stark reminder of the dangers of extremism and the devastating impact it can have on innocent lives.
