Brittani Simmons, a 23-year-old woman, tragically lost her life on June 29, 2022, in North Harris County, Houston, Texas. She was having dinner with her neighbor, Lioneicia Malveaux, when Kentrell O'Brien Brumfield, Malveaux's ex-boyfriend, forcibly entered the apartment and opened fire. Kentrell O'Brien Brumfield, a 36-year-old man from Farmerville, Louisiana, had a history of domestic violence and was
previously charged with robbing and choking Malveaux in June 2022. Less than a month after the choking incident, Brumfield broke into Malveaux's apartment while Simmons was present. He shot both women before fleeing the scene. The next day, Brumfield was arrested in Mississippi after leading law enforcement on a chase.
Brumfield was convicted of murder in a four-day trial, and a Harris County jury took only 16 minutes to deliberate before sentencing him to life in prison. Assistant District Attorney Lara Hogue emphasized that this was a senseless crime and that neither woman deserved to be shot.
