Billy F. "Bubba" Kennedy, a 38-year-old white male, was a Deputy Sheriff with the Upton County Sheriff's Department in Texas. On the night of October 2, 2013, he responded to a larceny call at a convenience store on South Burleson Avenue in McCamey, Texas. Upon arrival, Deputy Kennedy encountered a male suspect, and an exchange of gunfire ensued. Despite being mortally wounded, Deputy Kennedy managed to return fire and wound the suspect. Deputy Kennedy succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He had served in law enforcement for 14 years and was survived by his wife and two sons.
The suspect in the shooting was identified as Gary David Green, a male with a long criminal history, including charges for drugs and fighting. At the time of the incident, Green was out on parole. Following the shootout, Green was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds. The investigation revealed that Green had a history of violent behavior and had previously been incarcerated in the Huntsville Prison in Southeast Texas.
In June 2019, Gary David Green was convicted of capital murder in connection with the death of Deputy Kennedy.
