Dustin Donovan Smith, a 19-year-old male, tragically lost his life on October 27, 2013, in La Grange, Texas. Smith was attending a Halloween party at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall at the Fayette County Fairgrounds when an altercation broke out. During the altercation, JaKyle Harris, an 18-year-old Weimar High School football player, shot Smith in the back with a shotgun. Smith was rushed to St. Mark's Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, JaKyle Harris was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Harris was found to be the only person at the party with a gun, and police recovered a .32 caliber pistol behind his home, which had been tampered with in an attempt to destroy evidence. Two other individuals were also arrested for allegedly bleaching the gun to hinder the investigation. Harris was held in custody on a $750,000 bond.
