Carlos Chapa, a 31-year-old male of Hispanic ethnicity, tragically lost his life on January 13, 2014, in San Antonio, Texas. Carlos was a member of the Texas Mexican Mafia and held the rank of "General" within the organization. His death was part of a larger series of violent incidents involving the TMM.
The investigation into Carlos Chapa's death revealed that he was murdered by fellow TMM members.
Ruben Reyes, also known as "Menace" and a "Lieutenant of Lieutenants" in the TMM, was identified as the primary suspect. Reyes admitted to killing Carlos Chapa, along with two other TMM members, Mark Anthony Bernal and Johnny Solis , on January 13, 2014. The murders were reportedly carried out due to allegations of mishandling approximately $60,000 and making poor decisions in the TMM's daily operations.
Reyes transported and buried the bodies of Bernal, Chapa, and Solis in Pearsall, Texas. He was later arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder and using firearms during violent crimes. In November 2016, Reyes was sentenced to five consecutive life terms in federal prison for his role in these murders, as well as the murder of Balcones Heights Police Officer Julian Pesina.
The case highlighted the violent and dangerous nature of gang activities and the severe consequences for those involved. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the FBI, San Antonio Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division, Bexar County Sheriff’s Department, and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
