Darrell D. Hawkins, a 34-year-old male of African American ethnicity from Beaumont, Texas, tragically lost his life on March 16, 2014. He was one of three siblings fatally shot at their family home on Fourth Street in Beaumont. Darrell was shot in the head and later succumbed to his injuries at Christus Hospital-St. Elizabeth.
The suspect in this tragic incident was Darrell's younger brother, Joe Frederick Hawkins, aged 26 at the time.
Joe Frederick was apprehended the following day and charged with capital murder. According to witnesses, Joe Frederick had an altercation with all four victims before producing a handgun and opening fire. In addition to Darrell, Joe Frederick also killed his sister Reshawna Hawkins and brother Anthony Ray Hawkins Jr., and critically wounded his girlfriend, Shannon Latrice Henry, who survived the attack.
Jefferson County prosecutors chose not to seek the death penalty against Joe Frederick Hawkins due to his intellectual disability, with an IQ below 70. Instead, Joe Frederick was sentenced to life in prison for the triple homicide. The case was a devastating tragedy for the Hawkins family, and despite the legal proceedings, nothing could bring back the lives lost.
