Debbie Thammavongsa, an 18-year-old Laotian female, tragically lost her life on April 7, 2014, in Dallas, Texas. She was killed execution-style in her home along with her mother, Ammy Soumphonphakdy, 50, and an unidentified male victim who survived. The incident was initially believed to be a home invasion robbery. Debbie was the one who managed to call 911 for help before succumbing to her injuries.
The case went cold due to a lack of evidence, but in 2018, friends of the family urged
police to reopen the investigation. Homicide Detective John Valdez revisited the case and identified Christopher Joseph Gonzalez, 28, as the suspect. Gonzalez was arrested on October 2, 2020, by the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force at his home in Baytown, Texas. He now faces capital murder charges for his alleged involvement in the killings.
The investigation revealed that two men, one of whom was Gonzalez, argued with Debbie's mother before the shooting occurred. Witnesses reported seeing a red Dodge Challenger at the scene, which became a key piece of evidence. Gonzalez is currently being held at the Chambers County jail while awaiting trial.
Debbie Thammavongsa was remembered as a sweet, kind, and intelligent young woman who had recently graduated from Molina High School.
