On the night of October 22, 2016, a violent incident unfolded in the Westport entertainment district of Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of 25-year-old male Derrick Jones. The events began around 11:30 p.m. when Jones and two others were seated in a parked vehicle behind a Sun Fresh grocery store near 41st and Mill streets. They were accosted by armed assailants who demanded their property in a robbery and carjacking attempt.
During the confrontation, the victims were forced to empty their pockets, and a struggle ensued between Jones and one of the gunmen. Jones sustained a gunshot wound to the upper body, and the attackers fled the scene in the victim's vehicle, which was later discovered abandoned at Valentine Road and Broadway. Jones was transported to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators meticulously canvassed the area and recovered crucial evidence that would eventually break the case. Among the items found at the crime scene were a white Styrofoam cup and a drinking straw. Surveillance footage from the vicinity captured a suspect holding a similar cup shortly before the shooting occurred. Law enforcement officials utilized DNA testing on the discarded cup and straw, which produced a match identifying the suspect as Tyre L. Jackson, a man who was already on probation for a previous robbery and kidnapping conviction.
Jackson, also known by the nickname 'Lil Ree,' was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with Jones's death. In May 2019, the 36-year-old suspect pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action, as well as a separate robbery charge from a different incident in December 2016. Following his guilty plea, a judge sentenced Jackson to 20 years in prison for his role in the fatal shooting and robbery.
