On a Father's Day evening in Damascus, Maryland, a violent encounter cut short the life of 32-year-old James Joel Austin. The male victim, identified as Black/African American, was found with gunshot wounds on Sunday, June 18, 2023, in the 9800 block of Bethesda Church Road. Montgomery County Police officers were dispatched to the location around 9:57 p.m. following multiple reports of a shooting.
Despite the life-saving efforts of first responders, Austin was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Austin's death quickly identified a primary suspect, 16-year-old Isaiah Jamael Brown-Hawkins. It was revealed that Brown-Hawkins was allegedly the son of Austin's girlfriend. Following the shooting, Brown-Hawkins reportedly fled the scene in Austin's Honda, which was later found in Washington, D.C. A warrant for his arrest was issued on June 19, 2023, with charges including first-degree murder, armed carjacking, and use of a handgun in the commission of a felony.
The search for Brown-Hawkins continued for weeks. In a related development, on August 1, 2023, police arrested 19-year-old Khamani Imes of Damascus. Imes was charged with allegedly providing the firearm used in the shooting to Brown-Hawkins. His charges included underage possession of a firearm, first-degree murder, and conspiracy. The manhunt for the primary suspect concluded on August 31, 2023, when Brown-Hawkins was apprehended in Oxon Hill. His arrest followed a dramatic pursuit where he was seen driving a stolen vehicle, rammed police cruisers, and attempted to flee on foot before being captured. A handgun was recovered during the pursuit.
