The incident began at a strip shopping center on the North Freeway service road, where Forney and another individual were confronted by the three men. After leaving the plaza to avoid conflict, Forney and his companion were followed into the apartment complex, where the confrontation escalated. One of the men pulled out a pistol and shot Forney multiple times. The three men fled the scene, and Forney was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation was launched by the Houston Police Department, and anyone with information was urged to come forward. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
