Around 1:20 a.m., a dispute originated inside the establishment when a man approached one of Heilderberg's relatives and demanded an apology. The relative, unaware of any wrongdoing and believing the man had mistaken him for someone else, did not apologize. This perceived refusal sparked a confrontation that quickly escalated, causing disturbances throughout the club and prompting employees to turn on the lights and close the bar early.
As the patrons were ushered out of the venue, the conflict spilled onto the sidewalk and street. Outside the club, the altercation resumed, and fights broke out among the groups. Police reports indicate that Heilderberg's brother became involved in a physical struggle with another individual. Witnesses stated that Heilderberg stepped in to separate them and break up the fight. During this attempt to intervene as a peacemaker, he was shot. Authorities emphasized that Heilderberg was not fighting and had done nothing wrong leading up to the shooting.
