Shavon LeFaye Randle, a 13-year-old African American girl, was tragically kidnapped and murdered in Dallas, Texas, in June 2017. Shavon was taken from her aunt's home in Lancaster, where she was staying at the time. Her body was discovered days later in an abandoned house in Oak Cliff, along with the body of 19-year-old Michael Titus. The medical examiner determined that Shavon had been shot four times.
Authorities believe that Shavon was kidnapped in retaliation after $250,000 worth of marijuana was stolen from a group led by Darius Fields. The original target of the kidnapping was Shavon's cousin, Ledoris Randle, who was the girlfriend of Kendall Perkins, the individual who allegedly stole the drugs.
Several individuals were arrested and charged in connection with Shavon's kidnapping and murder. Darius Fields, who was already serving an 18-year federal prison sentence for weapons charges related to the case, was found guilty of organized criminal activity and sentenced to 55 years in prison. Fields denied any involvement in Shavon's kidnapping and murder, but the jury found him guilty after a few hours of deliberation. Desmond Jones, another individual involved in the case, was convicted in February 2020 and sentenced to 99 years in prison. Jones told authorities that Michael Titus killed Shavon because she saw his face, and that Laquon Wilkerson then killed Titus because they blamed him for Shavon's death and the stolen drugs.
LaQuon Deshon Wilkerson, 34, pleaded guilty to engaging in organized criminal activity and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. Three other charges filed against Wilkerson, including an aggravated kidnapping charge related to the Randle case, were dismissed. Devontae Owens, another suspect, remains jailed in Dallas County. Cell phone records placed Owens near Shavon's home, and their phones traveled in the same direction before hers was shut off. Owens was indicted in 2017 on an aggravated kidnapping charge, but a trial date has not been scheduled for his case.
The case also involved Kendall Perkins, who was accused of aggravated robbery in connection with the stolen drugs. Perkins' case has not yet gone to trial. Additionally, LaPorshya Polley, who was involved in acquiring weapons for Fields, was sentenced to four years in prison and two years of supervised release on federal firearms charges. Polley bought a gun for Fields, a convicted felon who was not legally permitted to buy firearms.
Shavon's tragic death and the subsequent legal proceedings have left a lasting impact on her family and the community. Her mother expressed relief at the sentencing of those involved but acknowledged that it would not bring her daughter back. The case highlights the devastating consequences of organized crime and the innocent lives that can be affected by such activities.
